BRENT R. STONE

November 10, 1949 – May 17, 2015

Brent R. Stone of Denver passed away on Sunday, May 17th  2015 at Denver Hospice.  He was 65.  He passed after a short but courageous battle with lymphoma.

Brent was born on the Presidio in San Francisco – quite literally beneath the Golden Gate Bridge – on November 10th, 1949.  He often said that may have explained his fondness for the Bay Area and Northern California – not to mention the Bridge itself.  He attended local schools in Sacramento, California and graduated from Sacramento’s Mira Loma High School in 1967.

At the age of twenty, he moved to Colorado.  He often said that he wanted to experience the magnificent Colorado Rockies first hand, and the best way to do that was to take up skiing.  He became an expert downhill skier and was a well-known resident of Breckenridge, Colorado for twenty years.  After many years on the slopes, he made the decision to move to Denver.  He was engaged in the real estate business for many years, but returned to Sacramento in 1995 to care for his ailing mother.  In 1996, he met his life partner, Dana A. Lawson.

While in Sacramento – and especially after returning to Denver in 2006 – he began to explore photography.  Photography had always sparked his interest, but he had never taken the time to truly develop that interest and expertise until the late 1990s.  What began as a hobby  turned into his life’s passion.  He traveled throughout Colorado and the American West capturing images that had a message.  He also specialized in photographing classic cars, old trucks and hood ornaments from the 1930s, 1940s, and 1950s.  His philosophy of photography was simple:  “Whether it is antique automobiles and trucks or hood ornaments or eclectic architecture or landscapes tinged with history, I seek subject matter that speaks to me and, hopefully, the viewer.”

After moving to Denver with his life partner in 2006, Brent was a constant presence in the Santa Fe Arts District.  He exhibited his work at the John Fielder Gallery for three years.  He also exhibited at the Artwork Network Gallery and the Long Trail Glass Gallery.  His work continues to be exhibited at the Eccentric Artist Gallery in Paonia, Colorado.  Brent regularly donated his photographs for auction at various charitable events.

Brent is survived by his partner of twenty years, Dana A. Lawson of Denver and his loving and faithful Miniature Schnauzer, Maxie.  He is also survived by many friends and acquaintances in Denver and Northern California.

Cremation has taken place and a formal funeral service will not be held.  Instead, there will be a celebration of Brent’s life on Saturday, June 13th at the Law Offices of Jonathan M. Ward at 1825 York Street, Denver.  In lieu of flowers, Brent’s partner is suggesting contributions to the Denver Hospice or the local animal welfare charity of one’s choice.
