VERNA EVANGELINE BLACKSTOCK

July 4, 1926 – June 15, 2016

Verna Evangeline Blackstock, our mother, sister and grandmother, died June 15, 2016. She was a strong mother, compassionate, and involved in her children’s lives. She was artistic and creative; she painted and expressed her Norwegian heritage through her rosemaling. She loved flowers and created a rose garden which greeted visitors to her door throughout the summer. She enjoyed decorating and filled her home with many beautiful objects. She was proud of her Irish and Norwegian background and wrote many stories of her family history, which she printed and gave to grateful family members to treasure. Verna was an active member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Littleton, Colorado for many years. She went to nursing school in Minnesota, obtained her BA from the University of Colorado, and her Master’s Degree from Vanderbilt University. Her nursing career spanned over 50 years and included county health care, teaching nursing, and counseling veterans at the Denver Veterans Hospital.

She was the mother of two sons, James David (Carol) of Littleton, Colorado; Joel Thomas Blackstock (Laura) of Birmingham, Alabama; and a daughter, Jill Marie Scaggs of Littleton. Her grandchildren include Spencer Blackstock, Evan Blackstock (Mariana), Andrew Blackstock, Joel Blackstock, Jr. (Emily); Grace Blackstock, Jesse Warner, Josephine Shipe, George Shipe and Angus Shipe, as well as two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. She is survived by her sisters Becky Lambert of Antonio, Texas and Lucille Ferguson of Minneapolis, Minnesota, Orlynn Caldbeck

The funeral will be held at Ascension Lutheran Church in Littleton on Tuesday, June 21 at 2:00 p.m. and viewing will be held at Drinkwine Mortuary beginning at 1:00 p.m. The burial will take place on Monday, June 27 at 11:00 a.m. in Stewartville, Minnesota at the Woodlawn Cemetery. Flowers and/or memorial donations can be sent to Ascension Lutheran Church, Littleton, Colorado or Woodlawn Cemetery in Stewartville, Minnesota.
