DHOOGE, DOROTHY MAE
1934-2019
Dorothy Mae Dhooge, a resident of Centennial, Colorado, departed for her next life on June 19, 2019.
Dorothy was born on February 20, 1934 in Berwyn, Illinois, the second child of Joseph and Beatrice Humpal. Dorothy worked for the Western Electric Company in the 1950s where she met Lucien O. Dhooge. They were married in September 1956 and celebrated fifty-seven years of marriage prior to Lucien’s passing in 2013. Lucien and Dorothy had two children, Lucien and Denise. The family moved to Colorado in January 1965, and Dorothy made Colorado her home for the remainder of her life.
Dorothy and Lucien traveled the country with their children and, in later years, on their own in their recreational vehicle. Dorothy and Lucien were also accomplished dancers and could be found on many weekends cutting the rug and enjoying one another’s company. Dorothy was introduced to baseball by her father and passed along her love of the game to her children. She was an avid Colorado Rockies’ fan from the very beginning and enjoyed attending games at Coors Field. She always welcomed the coming of spring as it meant the start of a new baseball season.
Dorothy was also a fighter having beat a host of health issues over the years and cancer on four separate occasions. Lucien and Denise often described their mother as the toughest and bravest person they ever met. But while she was tough on cancer, she was a caring and supportive mother who made sure to tell her children how much she loved them every time they spoke or visited.
Dorothy is survived by her son Lucien J. Dhooge (Julia) of Decatur, Georgia and daughter Denise M. Dhooge Perkovich (Joseph) of Morrison, Colorado. Dorothy also leaves behind many friends whose lives she touched over the years. The family thanks the staff and medical professionals at Swedish Hospital and Lutheran Hospice for their care and compassion.
