I cannot begin to express my gratitude for Derek's guidance to a new RTD employee who began in 1981 and have still not retired. When I first started at RTD, I kept getting these huge green-bar print-outs from some guy name Derek, who thought they might assist me in ridership reporting. We finally met some weeks later, and he kept referring to his "customers"--I had perceived as riders merely as numbers and nothing much more than that. Derek, on the other hand, viewed each rider as a unique individual with specific needs which should be accommodated as much as possible. He was always available in my "crisis mode" to assist me in developing new computer applications to cover up my screw-ups in a "scientific" basis (although he always told me this was the last time he was going to work overtime to cover for me). Whenever I begin randomly to crunch numbers, I always think: "What would Derek have done...." God bless him!

My sincerest condolences. I worked with Derek at the RTD from 1979 until his retirement some 10 years ago. An extraordinary individual, he did incredible work in helping to serve the people of the metro area by making a huge difference in the quality of their transit service. I valued him highly, respected him and his ethics, and I thank him for his contributions, his advice/support/patience, and for being a long time friend.
