To say you will miss someone is such an abstraction of reality that it hardly merits expression, but I will miss Ed. And I suspect I barely knew him. To his loved ones who will miss him exponentially more, I send my heartfelt sympathies. He loved you all so very, very much.

Having known lovely O’Tasha first, we met Ed Burns when we asked him to perform our wedding ceremony, something that he put much thought into and really loved to do to get couples started on the right path. It was so relaxing and reassuring for such an important moment, and Ed made it both serious and fun. He was a calm and steady presence. I can still remember his jokes and laughter as well as the commitment.
Then when we needed guidance for an immigration issue, we asked Ed about a referral. He recommended a young and extremely competent immigration lawyer saying he was amazed at what she had accomplished. We worked with that lawyer for eight years to get through all the steps needed for citizenship. We can’t imagine how anyone else could have understood and worked through our details let alone have the earnest ethical drive to reach our goals. Thank goodness for Ed’s insight, observation, and judgment about this attorney, who proved his wisdom about quality when she became an Immigration Judge.
He was an intelligent, kind man, who could joke about the military – we told him our son was joining the Navy, and we were wondering where he would take and put his “stuff”, and Ed quickly responded, “There’s no room for stuff!” – or chatter about our new floor or the thrills of owning a Prius. He’s gone too soon, and in our hearts we will miss him. Peace and comfort to you, Ed.

What a wonderful man. I had the pleasure of working with him for many years. He was the epitome of kindness and caring. An incredibly intelligent man who loved to share his knowledge and experience. When he was leaving the courthouse on his last day at work, he had his Sheltie dog with him, I didn't know he was retiring and he hadn't really told anyone, because he was the kind of man who didn't want to draw attention to himself. I was so sad because we were losing such an intelligent, kind and caring man. And I knew I would miss the lively and intelligent conversations along with the opportunity to work with such a wonderful person. Thank you Magistrate Burns, you shared so much knowledge, were so kind and caring. Just an amazing human being.

Dearest O'Tasha, Megan and all of Ed's loved ones,

I met Ed in 1997, before I met O'Tasha. He was the very fair judge listening to my filed case.

Sending much love and light to O'Tasha and loved ones.
