Master Sergeant Shawn Hansen, 33, Aurora, CO, formerly of De Smet, SD, died Saturday, June 1, 2019, at the University of Colorado Medical Center surrounded by his family.
A funeral service will be held 9:00 AM Monday, June 10, 2019 at the De Smet Event Center, with Reverend Jim Millman, officiating. Burial will follow at De Smet Cemetery. There will be no visitation.
Shawn Hansen was born July 26, 1985, at Aberdeen, SD. He attended school at DeSmet, and was a graduate of Lead/Deadwood High School. Shortly after graduation, Shawn enlisted in the US Army Infantry. During his service, he spent 3 years in South Korea. It was there he met the love of his life, Maria (Pia), of the Philippines. They were united in marriage in 2005. They welcomed their son, Jace, in 2006.
Following his military career, he enlisted in the United State Air National Guard, where he was still serving at the time of his death. He proudly served his country for 15 years.
He is survived by his wife Maria (Pia), and his son, Jace (12), both of Aurora CO; his parents Jodi and Karen Hansen, De Smet; sisters Melissa (Chad), Wyatt (1) and Kaiya (8) Lade, Madison SD; and Chelsea (Jesse), Gracie (7) and Ty (4) Currier, Brookings SD; his maternal grandmother, Shirley Lenz, DeSmet; his father and mother-in-law, Tomas and Anita Mata, Rapid City SD; his sisters-in-law Abigail Semple, Melanie Bautista, and Maria Christina Mata and families (Wenceslao Simeon). In addition, many uncles, aunts, cousins, friends and his military family were grateful for having shared his life.
Shawn is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather and paternal grandparents.
