In Loving Memory - Vincent James Long - Sept 29, 1928 - Mar 17, 2018
Soldier, Husband, Farmer, Father
Vin was born in Roxbury, NY on September 29, 1928 to Bud and Pauline Long.
He Graduated from Roxbury Central School, Roxbury, NY in 1946 and immediately entered the US Army Air Corps where he was deployed as an MP to the occupational force in Japan. While there, he volunteered for a secret mission under Col. Dean Hess to establish and support bases for the Korean Air Force at the beginning of the Korean War.
After the war, he held a variety of positions within the Air Force and graduated from the NCO Academy with honors. He was selected for the Titan II Missile Program at Vandenberg AFB where he would remain until his retirement in 1966.
He entered the corporate world but after 10 years, decided that was no longer the life for him and moved with his wife Leta and two youngest sons to the Catskill Mountains of NY to take over the Cartwright family dairy farm in Denver, NY. He retired from farming in 1981 and in 2000 relocated to Centennial, CO with his wife Leta to be near their grandchildren.
Throughout his years in the Denver area, Vin was an active member of the St. Andrews United Methodist Church and passionate supporter of the church’s Outreach programs and other charities serving the less fortunate in greater Denver.
Vin is survived by Leta, his loving wife of 67 years, sons, Mike, Jim, Dean, Bob and Scott, daughters-in-law Kathy, Patricia, Mandy and Cruz, the grandchildren he adored, Kiley, Casey, Jena, Rebecca, Nathan, Aaron, Davis, Danny and Leeta and his sister Lois along with many nieces and nephews. Our sadness is profound, but we are happy he is free of pain and limitation.
A celebration of Vin’s life will be held at St. Andrews United Methodist Church on Monday, March 25 at 2:00PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to Habitat for Humanity or After Hours Ministry via the St. Andrews United Methodist Church Outreach Program at www.gostandrew.com.
