Angela Brett Obituary

Angela Marie Rascon was born July 31st, 1983 in Groton, Connecticut.

From a young age Angie showed an inclination toward art, whether it was classic arts such as painting and crafts to more physical artistry such as dancing and gymnastics. Her love of art lead her to win state-wide contests in both art and gymnastics; in the fifth grade she won an art competition pitting her against the best artists her age from around Colorado, and when she was thirteen she won a gold medal in state gymnastics in the balance beam, competing against women up to four years older than her. This drive would eventually lead to her becoming the captain of both the cheerleading and gymnastics squads at Green Mountain High School, from which she graduated in 2001.

Angie's other great passion was animals. She loved animals of all types, eventually having owned and raised animals as diverse as rats to dogs. Dogs became her main focus, having raised several wonderful puppies over the years, most recently Izzaboo.

At the tender age of 17 Angie was kicked out of her house by her mother, and started her life on her own. After graduating high school, Angie managed to leverage her love of animals into a vet-tech position at the center for animal wellness, despite having no formal education in treating animals. She worked there for 5 years, during which time she rose to become the lead vet-tech, the right hand to the veterinarian she worked for.

Her time helping animals came to an end when her limitless love of the animals crashed head long into the reality of the position she was in - one of her duties was to put down sick, injured, or unwanted animals. It wounded her soul having to do such a thing, and thus she decided to move on from a field she generally loved.

Channeling her other interests, Angie decided to use her artistry to make a living, becoming a dancer and bartender. It was during this period of her life that she met the man who would become the love her life, Cory Brett, when he serendipitously moved into the condo next to the one she was living at.

Shortly after meeting, they began dating. Despite finding each other, this was a difficult time in the young couples' lives. Both struggled with past traumas and alcoholism. This period was incredibly rocky, but they got through it together. Cory would later say that Angie saved him from his PTSD, while Angie would say it was Cory that inspired and believe in her enough to pursue her newfound dream of becoming a chef.

With little to no outside help, Angie went to the culinary school Escoffier, where she completed her training of a two-year degree in ten months. While she worked at the School of Mines for a short time right out of Escoffier, it was at the Glenmoor Country Club where she really cut her teeth and honed her skills as a chef. She worked passionately and diligently, yet was given little recognition for her contributions. She watched as other workers – men – were given recognition and promotions when they worked half as hard and lacked the technical skills Angie had mastered. Her frustration with what seemed to be a boys club grew and after five years of not being paid her due, she quit, intending to find a place that would recognize her for the great chef she had become.

She wouldn't have to wait long. Within two days of leaving Glenmoor she earned the much coveted Executive Chef position she had sacrificed so much for. She worked in that position for six weeks, earning praise from her employer and those whom she prepared meals, before her sudden and shocking death on April 26th, 2024. She was only 40 years old.

Angela is survived by her loving husband, Cory Brett, and her beloved puppies Teddy and Izzaboo. She will be remembered by those who loved her as a fearless lion who never gave up or backed down from anything she knew in her heart was right. She is singular star, whose prismatic light shines on within those who love her, never dimming or fading as long as we remember her and live as fiercely and fearlessly as she did.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to an organization that supports women in the arts. She was such an "eclectic artist", any foundation with those goals will be acceptable.

The funeral will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Littleton on May 17 at 11:00am. The address is 1609 W. Littleton Blvd. Littleton, CO 80120

A wake will be held at Cory and Angie's home afterward: 17112 E. Stanford Ave. Aurora, CO 80015. All friends and loved ones are welcome to attend.
