Anne Elisabeth Baumert Peterson was born March 14, 1929 in a seaport city located in the eastern part of Germany. Her comfortable life was upended by the start of World War II in 1939 and as a young girl and later a young adult she endured many hardships. She and her older sister were separated from the rest of their family and they spent months traversing Germany to reunite – traveling on foot by day and sleeping in barns or shelters by night - oftentimes having only a single daily meal of bread and cabbage. Anne and her sister eventually settled in the city of Marburg where Anne found a job as a typist in the offices of the United States Army during the Allied occupation of Germany. It was there that she met her future husband Major Van Peterson. They wed in September 1952 on her husband’s birthday and Anne proudly became a United States citizen.
Anne loved her life as the wife of an officer. She and her husband settled in New Hampshire, then Oregon where their first child Van was born. The family lived in the seaside town of Astoria where one of Anne’s most interesting jobs was that of radio reporter “Elaine the Weather Vane” who informed locals of weather and tide conditions. They eventually relocated to the San Francisco Bay Area where Van retired from the Army and began his career with the USDA. Two more children followed – Lisbeth and William. Anne had great pride in her home and family. She was a meticulous housekeeper and was highly skilled at sewing, crocheting, knitting, and embroidery as she created many beautiful items that were prized and appreciated by the recipients. She cherished her husband and children and remarked many times that the love of her family made her life very rich.
Anne and her husband Van were married for 55 years when he passed away in 2008. She leaves behind her children Van (Sheri), Lisbeth (Gary), William (Renee), and grandchildren Kiersten, Kara, Van, James, Madelyn, Lindsay, and Nicole. Anne was pre-deceased by her husband Van, her brother Louis, her sister Ilsa, and her parents Walter and Elisabeth. Anne was a lovely woman with a quiet radiant beauty that never faded. She will be greatly missed and always remembered.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023, at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, Staging Area A.
