Barbara Richert born May 27, 1948, in Coronado, California, passed away peacefully in her sleep in November 2024. She was a remarkable woman with an unshakable passion for family and friends. Barbara leaves behind a legacy of kindness, and an unwavering devotion to those she held dear.
After graduating from The Ohio State University with a degree in Economics, Barbara met the love of her life, John, in 1974. They married and built a beautiful life together in Colorado, sharing 45 years of marriage filled with love, laughter, and countless cherished memories.
A trailblazer in her career, Barbara became the first female store manager at May D&F in Colorado Springs, where her love for retail and her hundreds of employees shone brightly. Beyond her professional accomplishments, she was known for her love of education, especially history, politics and the U.S. presidents, and for her ability to captivate any room with her knowledge, storytelling and humor.
She loved to read, particularly historical books, and cherished her time spent with her countless, longtime friends over tea, lunches, and Bible study at St. Francis Cabrini. Her home was a spectacular sight during the holidays, adorned with decorations that rivaled retail stores, especially her iconic Christmas tree and tablescapes. She was a prolific letter writer and cheerleader to many. Italian food, long walks, and gift-giving were among her many joys, but nothing brought her more happiness than her beloved grandkids.
Barbara is survived by her husband, John; her daughters, Kathryn Tompkins (Ryan) and Olivia Chambers (Jonathan); her five grandchildren, (Tanner, Eloise, Easton, Gus and Dylan), who were the light of her life; and baby Tompkins, whose upcoming arrival brought her immense joy in her final days.
She was predeceased by her parents Gus and Fran and her brother, Richard Gustaferro.
Barbara will be remembered as someone who would do anything for anyone, for her deep love for her friends and neighbors, and the profound impact she had on everyone who knew her. She leaves behind a life well-lived, filled with love and wisdom.
In lieu of flowers, Barb would have requested you make your bed every day, write an encouraging note or gift a book to a friend or relative, especially a young person.
Details about a celebration of her life are forthcoming.
