Col. Frank G. Gallo, USAF Ret., was born in Columbus, Ohio to Frances G. Gallo and Frank P. Gallo. He was known for his dry sense of humor, many interests, love of travel, and charming personality. He passed away on April 23, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Vanita Gallo, his daughters Lyn Heathershaw, Patricia Shapiro and Jean Clark, two stepchildren, Brenda and Brandt, six grandchildren, Chris, Alex, Ashleigh, Conor, Savannah, Celia and Chandler, as well as three great grandchildren, Ellie, Gabriel, and Weston. His daughter Katherine, brother Jon, and sister Barbara preceded him in death.
During his career in the United States Air Force, Frank flew the F86 Saberjet, the B-52 Stratofortress, the Douglas C-47 Skytrain, the B-47 Stratojet, and the North American Sabreliner. After a tour of duty at the Pentagon, he completed his career with a tour of duty at the Air Force Accounting and Finance Center in Denver, where he decided to retire after 27 years of service.
As a civilian, Frank was employed by the State of Colorado as Director of Financial Services at the Colorado Judicial Department from which he retired in 1991. He was an educated man, receiving both his bachelor’s and master’s degree.
He and his wife Vanita enjoyed living in Costa Rica for 10 years. They moved to Granada, Nicaragua, where they restored an old colonial house. He was proud to be a member of Post No. 1 of the American Legion in Granada. Frank’s favorite activities were traveling the world via cruise ships and ATVing with friends in Moab.
Frank was active in the local aviation community, serving as President of the Colorado Pilots Association and participating in many flying activities. Throughout his life, Frank enjoyed sailing, skiing, writing, antiquing, speaking Spanish whenever he could, and working on his small family ranch in Las Animas County. He will be remembered for his courage, strength, wit, and love for his family and friends.
There will be a Memorial Service for him May 20, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. This will be held at Drinkwine Family Mortuary, 999 West Littleton Boulevard, Littleton, CO. Refreshments follow. Frank will be laid to rest at Ft. Logan National Cemetery.
