Cynthia Beattie Astor Obituary

Cynthia Beattie Astor, aged 80, passed away peacefully at her home in Denver, Colorado, surrounded by her beloved husband and faithful poodle, Guinness, on May 15th, 2024.

Cynthia, born in California in 1943 to Virginia and Douglas Beattie, was the youngest of four sisters: Helen “Cici” Lane, Genia Simpson, and Cielle Tewksbury. Cynthia’s daughter, Shalagh, was born in 1961. Cynthia met her beloved husband, Larry "Bear" Astor in 1968 and married in 1975. Together, they embarked on an adventurous journey while Bear served in the Navy from 1964-1984. They traversed the globe, and lived all over the United States from Whidbey Island, WA, to Newport Rhode Island, from San Diego, CA, to Washington, D.C., before settling in Colorado in 1985, which they have lovingly called home ever since. Shalagh died unexpectedly in 1994, but her memory remained deeply cherished by Cynthia, and she maintained an active involvement in her granddaughter Desiree’s life. In 2015, Desiree welcomed a son, Atlas, whom Cynthia adored as her great-grandson for nearly nine years until her passing.

Known affectionately as "Cinny," Cynthia's heart overflowed with a desire to serve others. She volunteered her time for over 2 decades in the Prescription Pets program at Children's Hospital, and in Silverthorne, CO, bringing joy and comfort to countless children alongside her cherished standard poodles. Her dedication to spreading happiness knew no bounds, as she delighted the young patients with her dogs donning hats, costumes, and baskets full of fun tricks.

Beyond her altruistic endeavors, Cinny's creative spirit shone brightly through her writing. In 1997, she penned the poignant children's book, "A Song for Cecilia Fantini," a heartfelt exploration of grief aimed at helping her granddaughter navigate the loss of her mother at a tender age.

Cynthia will be deeply missed by her family and friends, and as we learn how to live without her we will treasure her memory and continue to embody the gifts of her caring and kindness, which inspire and guide our lives. A memorial service to honor Cynthia's remarkable life will be held, with details forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Children’s Hospital of Colorado, a cause close to Cynthia's heart.

In the worlds of the Welsh Air sung by Cynthia’s father in his opera days:

“Earthly dust from off thee shaken, all immortal thou shall waken peace, my love, in journey taken home through the night.”
