Edward Zimmerman Obituary

When Edward J. Zimmerman was 51 years old he started an adventure in 1972 to move his wife, 7 children, Scottish terrier and a 15 foot camper pulled by a station wagon from New Jersey to Littleton Colorado. After 48 years, he died peacefully on February 11, 2020. He was the oldest son of Edward and Myrtle Zimmerman of Gladstone, New Jersey. Edward was born on January 27, 1921 in Martinsville, New Jersey. He grew up in Gladstone and attended Gill St. Bernards school where he was one of the first day students to attend the all boys school. Edward enlisted into the Army and was a Sergeant stationed in the Philippines (1942-46) during World War ll. After his service was over, he went to work for Johns Manville. He started in the mailroom and worked his way up to senior distribution engineer. He attended Rutgers University at night. He was transferred to Colorado in 1972. He retired from Johns Manville in 1982.

Edward married the love of his life, Kathryn Walsh of Andover, Massachusetts, on August 24, 1952 at St.Augustine Catholic Church. They lived in Gladstone and had 7 children. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Edward loved cars, reading, spending summers at Salisbury Beach, camping and most of all his family.

He is survived by his children Joan (Jim) Madsen, Peter (Heidi) Zimmerman, Suzanne (Tom) Alton, Carol Zimmerman and Philip Zimmerman, Grandchildren Kathryn Dokson, Kerri Starkey, Kristi Alton, Nick Alton, Melissa Madsen, Katrina Zimmerman, Ben Madsen, Abby Masden, Jacob Zimmerman, JD Zimmerman Great GrandchildrenTyler Dokson, Max Dokson, Colin Dokson and Alex Dokson, Jackson Alton and Nicholas Alton.

He is preceded in death by his wife Kathryn, his brother George, his sons Paul Zimmerman and Andrew Zimmerman.

A service will be on Tuesday, February 18 at Drinkwine Family Mortuary. There will be a private viewing for family, a rosary at 3:00 followed by a funeral service at 3:30.
