Elayne Joyce Beam—a beloved sister, mother, partner, friend, teacher, and cherished member of the Englewood, Colorado community—passed away peacefully on Monday, October 6, 2025, lovingly surrounded by several members of her family. She was 66.
Elayne was born near Caldwell, New Jersey on December 2, 1958. She grew up in Caldwell; King of Prussia, Pennsylvania; and Greenwood Lake, New York. She attended Monroe-Woodbury High School in Central Valley, New York, and later studied early childhood development. In the late 1970s, she lived briefly in Utah and Minnesota before returning to Greenwood Lake.
Elayne—also known as “Sissy” (short for “sister”) among her youngest siblings—was a nurturer, blessed with the gifts of patience, selflessness, tenderness, compassion, beneficence, and generosity. As the eldest of seven children, she often felt personally responsible for the welfare of her family. She was a devoted caretaker, a wise and steady voice of reason, a faithful ally, a sympathetic ear, and an excellent secret-keeper. She was also fun and hip, and her ultra laid-back vibe disarmed anyone in her orbit. She was a limitless source of love for her family and friends.
Elayne moved to Englewood, a city she adored, in 1988. Five years later, she gave birth to her daughter, Arielle. Naturally, Arielle became her most important priority. But even as a parent, she never abdicated her sense of responsibility for her mother and siblings. Elayne frequently traveled back to New York to provide hands-on care for them and, even with a small child in tow, made sure she was present to celebrate each of her siblings’ major milestones.
For three decades, Elayne worked as a teacher’s assistant for Englewood Schools. She spent more than 20 years at Bishop Elementary helping students with special needs. The loving, trusting bonds she developed with those children—some of whom lived with severe mental and physical disabilities—transcended her day-to-day responsibilities on the job: for at least one student, she walked a mile or more just to help the child get on or off the school bus; for another student, she sacrificed her own lunch to make sure the child would have something to eat. There are no doubt countless other stories of Elayne’s acts of selflessness toward the students at Bishop Elementary and their families. She cared authentically and loved wholly.
Elayne always enjoyed living simply. She valued kindness, love, and time spent with family over material possessions or money. She was a huge fan of rock and roll, blues, country, and pop music—especially from the 1950s, ‘60s, and ‘70s. She read extensively, too. And while she was a great home cook, she’d rarely object to going out for a cheeseburger and a milkshake or a Blue Moon. Elayne loved riding with her partner Rudy on his Harley Davidson, sitting on her back patio with family and friends, visiting with her siblings, doting on her students from Bishop Elementary, and snuggling with her cat, Lilith. One of her favorite pastimes was soaking in Colorado’s famous natural hot springs (Rudy’s hot tub was also high on her list). More than anything, though, Elayne loved being Arielle’s mom.
Elayne was preceded in death by her mother, Donna; her maternal grandparents, Louise and Raymond; her uncle, Robert; and her niece, Olivia. She is survived by her daughter, Arielle; her partner, Rudy; her siblings Sandra, Lora, William, Joel, Valerie, and Rachel; her uncles David and Jeffrey; and her eight nieces and nephews.
A private celebration of life will be held among family and friends in Englewood on Saturday, October 25, 2025. Contact the family for details.
Her family wishes to thank everyone who has shared kind words in her memory.
