Elvira Barber Obituary

Elvira Marie Barber, 93, went to be with the Lord on October 3, 2022. Elvira was born September 14, 1929 in Herndon, Kansas. She was the oldest child of Conrad Wilhelm Glad and Ella Marie Glad. Elvira graduated from Tucson High School and attended the University of Arizona where she received her Bachelor of Arts in Education in 1952.  She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority. Elvira met her husband, George Arthur “Art” Barber, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Tucson, Arizona. They were married on May 31, 1952 and lived in Grants, New Mexico where Art worked for the Anaconda Copper Company.

In 1953, Elvira and Art moved back to Tucson where they raised their four children, Tim Barber (1953), Jennifer Watson (1954), Susan Barber (1958), and Patrick Barber (1963).  During their 69-year marriage, Elvira and Art explored the world together. Often accompanying Art on his mineral exploration trips, Elvira visited Scandinavia, Europe, South and North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Africa. In 1977, they moved to Littleton, Colorado.

Elvira shared with Art her love of family and faith. She was devoted to her children and grandchildren, Jeffrey Watson, Emily Barber, Joseph Barber, David Barber, and Steven Barber.  Elvira loved to host family gatherings and was an exceptional cook. She tempted family members and friends with her famous lasagna, Swedish pancakes, and molasses cookies. Her ability to nurture also was seen in the garden, where she grew vegetables, herbs, and flowers. Elvira’s childhood days as a young girl on her parents’ Kansas wheat farm led to her lifelong love for and talents in rescuing and growing plants inside and out.

Elvira and Art were longtime members of St. Philip Lutheran Church, where Elvira was active in the women’s groups and supported the men’s groups. They also were avid Colorado Rockie’s fans, carefully following the team’s schedule and rarely missing a game. Elvira also was a member and officer of PEO.

Elvira is proceeded in death by her husband, George Arthur Barber; parents, Conrad Wilhelm Glad and Ella Marie Glad; her four siblings, Elberta Sandal, Barbara Wenner, Vincent Glad, and Marlene Hall; and her grandson, David Barber. She is survived by her children, Timothy Barber and wife Nina, Jennifer Watson and husband Thomas, daughter Susan Barber, and Patrick Barber and wife Kelly; and her grandchildren, Jeffrey Watson, Emily Barber, Joseph Barber, and Steven Barber. Elvira will be deeply missed by her loving family and her many friends.

Elvira’s memorial service will be held at St. Phillip Lutheran Church in Littleton, Colorado on Friday, October 7 at 11 am.  A reception will follow service at the church.
