Fred Smith

Fred went home to be with the Lord on Sunday September 18th, passing suddenly of natural causes. Fred was born on March 2, 1948 to Ray and Bonnie Smith of Bethany Oklahoma. Fred had two siblings, Danny and Carol, as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews that enriched his life. Fred was married to Cathy, the love of his life, and the only woman on earth strong enough to put up with him. They just celebrated their 52nd wedding anniversary in August. Fred and Cathy had two children. Kelley, who Fred called his joy. And Andrew, who was Fred’s pride through and through.
Fred was an accomplished craftsman and carpenter; he could build a house from the ground up and fix or fabricate anything. Nothing around the house could stay as is because he needed to add finishing touches, affectionately known as “Freddy-ize”. From his home-made corn cleaner (for the corn stove at the farm), to gate latches he should have patented, to tying flies over the winter months, to avidly collecting arrowheads and guns, and most recently rebuilding antique lamps, he was always tinkering with something to keep him occupied. Fred’s greatest passions in life were his faith in God, hunting, fishing with his many friends and son(s), and spending time with his beloved springers, Ellie and Winnie. Most notably Emma, “the dog of his life”, who proceeded him in death and was surely waiting joyfully at heavens gates for his arrival. Fred will be remembered for his passionate, albeit sometimes ornery personality, as well as his humor, silly antics, immense generosity, and most of all his unwavering love of God. He was loved and will be missed more than he knows.

Celebration of Life services will be held on Friday, September 30, 2022 at 1:00 PM at Drinkwine Family Chapel. 

A Memorial Service will then take place on Saturday October 29, 2022 at Methodist Church in McCook Nebraska at 2 o'clock.
