George Thomas O’Malley III, “Tom”, was born in San Angelo, Texas to George Thomas O’Malley Jr. and Nadine Parish O’Malley. The family lived in San Angelo until after WWII and then relocated to Ohio. Tom had a happy childhood living in Chillicothe and then moving to Columbus, Ohio.
We are told Tom was a gifted student and advanced two grades in elementary school. He started high school at 12 and started his college career at Ohio State University when he was 16. He was a lifelong Buckeye fan.
The family relocated to Colorado in 1962. Tom started at University of Denver on a wrestling scholarship. After graduation from DU, Tom proceeded directly to the DU Law School. Tom financed his education as a furniture mover/truck driver for Amick Moving & Storage Company. Tom had even another position as a coach and PE teacher at All Souls School in Englewood. Tom loved coaching and met the love of his life, the fun and exuberant, Sharon Burke. They married and had two beloved sons George Thomas the 4th and Tim.
He graduated from the DU Law School in 1969 and joined the US Army Judge Advocates and was promptly sent to Vietnam. At only 25 years old, he was known as the “Baby Judge”. Tom was awarded two Bronze Stars for his service as a negotiator to procure the release of American soldiers held captive in villages. After returning from Vietnam, and completing his military service in Texas, Virginia, and Kentucky the family returned to Denver and Tom started his law practice.
Tom suffered an unthinkable tragedy in December 1992. The family was in a car accident and we lost Sharon and Tim. Tom was severely injured and retired from his law career. Young Tom took over as caregiver to his Dad as they navigated the years after. Always there to arrange housing, healthcare and help cheer on the Broncos with his Dad “young” Tom or “Little” Tom was incredibly devoted to his Dad.
Tom’s true passion was sports. He loved to play, watch and coach football, basketball, baseball and wrestling. Even his 5th grade football teams at All Souls School had playbooks and training schedules. Watching Tom and Tim and then grandsons Liam and Aidan play any sport was Tom’s joy.
Despite being a skilled and dedicated lawyer, one can also say that Tom was the nicest man you could ever meet. His words were always that of compassion, encouragement and love. He is greatly missed.
