Grafton Floyd Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Grafton Robert Floyd “Gram” announces his passing on October 6, 2018 at the age of 99.

He was born on December 13, 1918 in Baltimore, Maryland to Robert and Nora (Montgomery) Floyd. He was one of eight children. He joined the Navy in 1941, and was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, Alaska during World War II. While in the Navy, he worked as a machinist, a skill that he translated into his future career. He was honorably discharged in 1949, but continued to serve in the Reserves for several years after.

On May 27, 1940, he married Doris Marie Myers. He celebrated 59 wonderful years of marriage before her passing in 1999. Their only son Barton was born in 1951. A few years later they moved to Littleton, Colorado where Gram had a long, rewarding career with Martin Marietta.

During his time with Martin Marietta, he worked on several important and groundbreaking projects, including several of the Titan Missiles, as well as the MMU (Manned Maneuvering Unit) that is still used by astronauts today. He was well respected and made many lifelong friends during his time there.

One of his favorite titles was “Grandpa” and he dedicated himself to that fully. He had two granddaughters; Heather and Dawn and was an integral part of their lives.

Later in life, he was lucky enough to meet Maggie. She came into his life when he needed her most. She and her entire family were a blessing to Gram and his family during their time together. Her sense of humor and vitality helped keep him young at heart.

During his final years of life, he was lucky enough to be surrounded by his caring nieces, nephews and close friends. They helped boost his spirits and care for him until his passing.

He was preceded in death by his wife Doris Floyd. He is survived by his son Bart (Robin) Floyd of Two Harbors, MN, granddaughters Heather (Shane) Hood of Tulsa, OK, and Dawn (Dominic) Myers of Republic, MO; four great-grandchildren; Quintin, Conner, Chloe, and Corbin Myers all of Republic, MO; his loving partner Maggie Day of Aurora, CO and her entire family; nieces Debra, Diane, Theresa, Sharon, Jacqueline and nephews Donald, Thomas, Rodney and Michael all of Colorado and numerous friends he made throughout his life.

Memorial services Friday, October 12th at 11:00 a.m. at Drinkwine Family Chapel – 999 W. Littleton Blvd, Littleton, CO. A reception will follow at Romano’s Restaurant – 5666 S. Windemere Ave., Littleton, CO. Private interment.
