Iyonne Mae Cross, beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025, at the age of 98 surrounded by love and good music. Born in Minitare, Nebraska on October 30, 1926, she was the daughter of Theodore (Ted) Schooley and Clarissa Mae Anderson.
On May 29, 1946, she married the love of her life and best friend, Rex G. Cross, with whom she shared 56 years of devoted marriage. Together, they built a beautiful life rooted in faith, family, and service.
Iyonne was a dedicated and active member of All Saints Catholic Church in Denver for over 70 years, a lifelong member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, and a proud member of the Does—the Ladies Auxiliary of the Elks, where she remained active until recent years. She served with pride as the First Lady of the Colorado Elks for two terms, supporting her husband during his time as State President. Her commitment to service extended beyond her community; she was also a devoted supporter of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, contributing faithfully throughout her life. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to St. Jude.
She is survived by her daughters, Linda Mae Bennett and Kristie Anne Wright, and her son, Kevin Cross; 15 cherished grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren. Those who loved her will carry her memory forward with love and laughter.
She is preceded in death by her parents; her beloved brother, Donald Schooley; her husband, Rex Cross; her son, Gregory Myrl Cross; daughters-in-law Shelley Cross and Bonita Cross; her son-in-law Nicholas Wright; and her grandson, Adam Rex Kaesemacher.
Known for her sharp wit, radiant humor, boundless love, and beauty, Iyonne was a woman who made everyone feel like family. She had a deep love of elephants, which she collected throughout her life. In many ways, they symbolized her perfectly: wise, strong, nurturing, and loyal. She was the grand matriarch of our family—a constant presence, a source of wisdom, and a light in all our lives.
She will be missed deeply and remembered always.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, July 28, 2025 at Drinkwine Family Mortuary. Iyonne will be laid to rest with her husband Rex at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, July 29, 2025, at Ft. Logan National Cemetery.
