James (Jimmy) Charles Craven, aged 87, passed away on January 15, 2025, at his home in Lakewood, CO. He was born in Wellington, TX, on July 28, 1937. Jimmy was known for his wonderful sense of humor and devotion to those around him. He was a beloved member of his family and community.
Jimmy lived in Clovis, NM for most of his life and graduated from Clovis High School. At the age of 16 he met the love of his life, Betty Smart. They married in 1957 and shared a wonderful 66 years together until her passing in May 2024.
From 1970-1976, he was a member of the Smarts Quartet along with Betty, her sister and brother-in-law. They traveled the country ministering the gospel through music and preaching. He worked at Clovis Floral for many years, starting in high school and then again after the quartet days. After his retirement from the floral, he went to work for Muffley Funeral Home for a number of years.
Later in life, Jimmy was known for playing Santa Claus, a role he took to heart and lived all year round. He loved the opportunity to bring joy and happiness to the young and old alike, it didn’t matter the time of day or the location; if a child saw him, Jimmy would smile and slip right into the role of Santa. His passion for spreading joy and love was a hallmark of his life.
He is survived by his son, Mike Craven (Wendy); grandchildren, Stacia Taylor (Nick), and Jonathan Craven; and great-grandchildren, Zachary and Emily Williams. Jimmy was preceded in death by his wife, Betty; his parents, Cecil and Elveda Craven; and his brother, Billy Craven.
Jimmy will be remembered for his loving spirit, his commitment to bringing joy to others and his enduring legacy within his family and community.
The first of two services celebrating his life will be held on Tuesday, January 21st at 2pm, at Drinkwine Family Mortuary, 999 W Littleton Blvd, Littleton, CO 80120. A second service will be held in Clovis, NM on Friday, January 24th at 11am (MST) at Muffley Funeral Home, 1430 Thornton St.
