James Wendell Harvey Neisler, Colonel, USAF, Ret.
March 30, 1933 – October 17, 2025
James Wendell Harvey “Jim” Neisler, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and distinguished physician, passed away peacefully after prolonged illness on October 17, 2025, in Denver, Colorado, at the age of 92.
Born on March 30, 1933, in Boulder, Colorado, Dr. Neisler was the son of Wendell Hanson Neisler and Beulah Harvey Neisler, who both predeceased him. He was the beloved brother of Betty Miller (Bill) and the late Robert Neisler.
Ever appreciative of education and hard work, Jim was a graduate of the University of Colorado, both for his bachelor's degree and its School of Medicine. Dr. Neisler dedicated his career to women’s health and the advancement of gynecologic oncology. He completed his fellowship in Oncology at M.D. Anderson and was a Fellow of both the American College of Surgeons and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
Dr. Neisler practiced medicine for 43 years, during which time he cared for countless patients with compassion, precision, and deep respect. There are many grateful patients whose lives were touched—and often saved—by his astute scientific inquiry and warm bedside manner.
During his distinguished service with the United States Air Force, which gave him the chance to travel the world and from which he retired with the rank of Colonel, Dr. Neisler met the love of his life, Diana Tamara Ambergs, in Paris. Through 62 years, their marriage was a lifelong partnership filled with devotion, adventure, laughter, and family. He affectionately referred to her as his “Queen”, and he loved almost everything that his gourmet cook of a wife prepared for him. Never one to be too fancy or polished, he thoroughly enjoyed a plain hamburger and coke with equal relish. Together they raised four children — Kirsten Omer (Robert), the late James Richard Neisler, Alexandra Neisler (Todd Martens), and Mark Neisler (Gretchen) — who were the center of his life.
He was a proud and loving “Opa” to Nathaniel, Nicole, Catherine, Owen and Jakob, and he is reunited in spirit with his beloved grandson Nicholas. He delighted in teaching his grandchildren the University of Colorado fight song and sharing his love of family and tradition, passing along his lifelong loyalty as a Buff.
Always quick with a joke — even, and sometimes to the chagrin of his colleagues, in the operating theatre — Dr. Neisler brought humor and lightness to those around him. He was passionate about travel, skiing, genealogy, and reading, and was fluent in German, which enriched his European travels and deepened his love for the culture. He especially cherished the family’s many memorable visits to Lech, Austria, as well as the wonderful times spent at the family retreat in Florida, and in the beautiful mountains surrounding the family cabin in Eldora, Colorado, where he enjoyed skiing and the alpine air he so loved.
An avid tennis enthusiast, he was a longtime member of the Belmont Country Club, where he enjoyed both the sport and the friendships it brought.
He will be remembered for his integrity, intellect, and generosity, as well as for the joy, humor, and love he shared with his family, friends, patients, and colleagues throughout his remarkable life.
A full military funeral honoring Colonel Neisler’s service will be held at a later date at Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado.
