Janice Ford Obituary

Janice Clarice Ford, 95, of Littleton, Colorado, died December 29, 2023,  in Littleton following a  brief illness. A Celebration of Life will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church, 6281 W. Yale Avenue, Lakewood, CO 80227 on Saturday, January 20, 2024 at 10AM; reception to immediately follow at the church.

Janice Clarice Nelson was born September 11, 1928, to Wallace and Olga (Adamson) Nelson in Revenna, Nebraska. Despite living her early years in the Great Depression, Jan and her older sister, Joan, enjoyed playing with a number of cousins and visiting the library, which was located next door. The family moved to Denver in 1945. When she was 16, Jan started working at Montgomery Wards in Denver, roller skating on the third floor to deliver customer orders for shoes.

Jan graduated from Denver South High School in 1947 and started college at the University of Denver that fall. There, Jan met the love of her life, Jack Ford, in the Student Union. Both Jan and Jack said it was love at first sight. They married June 13, 1948, at the University Park Methodist Church in Denver. They welcomed their first son, David (1950) in Denver. They spent a short stint in Casper, Wyoming, before moving back to the Denver area. During this time, they welcomed Joel (1958) and Alan (1961).

Jan was active and independent. She golfed, notably getting a hole in one at Columbine Country Club, where they were members, She received the 2007 Distinguished Service Award from the Colorado Golf Hall of Fame for her 27 years as secretary for the organization. She painted. She threw pottery. She and Jack entertained and traveled both in the U.S. and internationally. Following Jack’s death in 2007, that independence served her well. She traveled extensively and found joy in the music of Celtic Thunder and other prominent Irish bands. That hobby helped her meet new friends to travel with in this last chapter of her life.

Jan is survived by her three sons, Dave (Liz) Ford, Littleton; Joel (Kris) Ford, Fort Collins; and Alan (Tracy) Ford, Littleton; six grandchildren Doug (Michelle) Ford, Aurora; Molly (Griff) McElvain, Littleton; Colby Ford, Fort Collins; Casee (Caleb) Bergstrom, Norfolk, Va.; Katie (Nolan) McLaughlin, Littleton; Jack Ford, Littleton; and great-grandchildren Greyson and Ryker Ford, Aurora; and Henry McLaughlin, Littleton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Wallace and Olga; her husband, Jack; dear sister, Joan, and an infant sister.

The family kindly requests in lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Joan Smith Memorial Award. Joan was Jan's beloved sister - https://giving.cu.edu/fund/joan-smith-memorial-award
