June Englehorn Obituary

ENGLEHORN, JUNE  E. (COX)

June E. (Cox) Englehorn passed away on 6 November, 2021  in Centennial, Colorado. She was born September 3, 1935, in Lewis County, Missouri, the fourth child of Homer L. and Elizabeth Gnuse Cox. She graduated from Quincy (Illinois) High School in 1953 and attended Western Illinois State University. In 1955 she moved to Denver and worked for Amarada Petroleum in Denver and Durango.

In 1959 she and James (Jim) A. Englehorn, a geologist with Phillips Petroleum, were married in Durango. Jim's work took them to Calgary, Alberta, Canada; Lima, Peru; Cochabamba, Bolivia; Stavanger, Norway; and Jakarta, Indonesia.

While in Canada she studied braille transcription, and for over 40 years transcribed textbooks into braille for blind students in each country where she and Jim lived.

June was acknowledged in 1993 with the Minori Yasui Community Volunteer Award in recognition of outstanding volunteer commitment and service.  And in 2008 she received CAER Connections Award from the Colorado Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Hearing Impaired in recognition of providing Nemeth Code materials and instruction to Colorado braillists. She was a member of The National Braille Association and the National Federation of the Blind.

June enjoyed gardening, hiking and searching for wildflowers.  Her passion was for transcribing printed materials into Braille for the blind. She loved meeting new people and conversing with whomever she
met wherever she was.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Jim, a sister, Wilma (Cox) Maples, Canton, Missouri, a niece, Shirley Eckhoff, in Quincy, Illinois, and a nephew, Donald Maples, in Edmond, Oklahoma.
