Marlene Carol Shimirak (Mugsie)
December 18, 1944 - December 23, 2023
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Marlene Carol Shimirak, affectionately known as Mugsie, on December 23, 2023, at the age of 79 in Sedalia, Colorado. Born on December 18, 1944, in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, to Lawrence and Sophie Sue Greyerbiehl. Marlene embodied love, faith and positivity. These values shaped her life and surrounded those in her presence with warmth and light. She cherished her family and embraced her roles as a friend, daughter, sister, wife, and mother with devotion and grace.
Marlene's career began as an office manager for Father Harris at the Jesuit Seminary in Toronto. She soon shifted her focus to her family, dedicating her life and love to them. Throughout her life, Marlene served in various volunteer capacities, impacting the lives of many. In her later years, she had the opportunity to travel and live in both Europe and China, supporting her husband's career and immersing herself in diverse cultures.
Marlene’s hobbies included ceramics, cooking, reading, and dancing. She found immense joy in spending time with her family, and creating lasting memories together. Marlene's curiosity and zest for life was evident in her love for travel and her enthusiasm for experiencing new adventures.
She leaves behind her cherished husband, Gerald Shimirak; her loving children, Todd Shimirak (Missy), Patrice Christensen (Matt), and Geraldine (Gerry) Hodne (Erik); her adored grandchildren, Sydney, Devon, Gunnar, Bridger, and Teagan; her brother Daniel Greyerbiehl (Mary Margaret); and sister-in-law Anne Greyerbiehl, along with their children.
Marlene was preceded in her journey by her brother Lawrence Greyerbiehl (2012), mother Sophie Sue Greyerbiehl (2013), and father Lawrence Greyerbiehl (1974).
A Celebration of Life is being planned for spring 2024 to honor Marlene's memory.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her name to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research - michaeljfox.org - an organization she embraced when diagnosed with Parkinson's 5 years ago or the Denver Hospice - thedenverhospice.org - who provided amazing care for her in the last months of her life.
