Mary Ann Dounay

Mary Dounay passed away on March 20, 2020. She is survived by her husband of 47 years, Gary, her daughters Jennifer and Amy, grandchildren Avery, Audrey, Maximilian, and Greta, and siblings John, Linda and Doug.

Mary Ann Fox was born and raised in Orchard, Nebraska, and graduated from high school in 1966. After earning her bachelor’s degree in chemistry from the University of South Dakota in 1970, Mary went on to teach physical science and chemistry at Valley High School in Valley, Nebraska, where she met her future husband Gary. Mary and Gary were married in 1972, and moved to Englewood, Colorado in 1974.

Mary took great pride in public service and civic engagement. She joined the Englewood Board of Education in 1982 and served as board president for much of her 23-year tenure on the board. After stepping down from the school board in 2005, Mary was appointed to the Englewood Education Foundation board, which she chaired for several years. As part of her foundation board duties, she helped select scholarship recipients among students who were low-income and experiencing other hardships and played a leading role in organizing the Foundation’s annual fundraiser. She took particular interest in supporting students, especially struggling learners, and volunteered as an assistant to the reading specialist at Clayton Elementary.

Mary was a deeply devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She took great pleasure in hosting family birthdays and holiday celebrations and enjoyed baking and crafts with her grandchildren. She also loved reading, travel, and watching football, especially the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

A funeral will be held at a later date when public gatherings of more than 10 people are permitted.
