Mary Vader Obituary

Mary Ann Vader passed away surrounded by family on February 9th, 2024.  Mary Ann was born on June 3rd, 1942, in St. Louis, MO to Paul and Jewell (Bea) Chevreaux.  After a short stint in Santa Fe, NM, where her father, Paul, did masonry work at the La Fonda Hotel and her mother, Bea, learned to make delicious corn tortillas, she spent her youth in Wichita, KS and graduated from East High School.

A lover of the written word, she earned her bachelor’s degree in English Literature at Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS.  She then went to Kansas City to teach high school English for several years. It was during this period that she met her future husband and army officer, Paul F. Vader Jr.  It is important to note that she didn’t just marry into the Vader family, she married into the Army and soon found herself living the valiant and humble life of an Army wife.  Whether it meant caring for young children while Paul was deployed to Vietnam or heading to the family’s newest post to arrange housing and schools in advance of the move, she understood the meaning of duty.  Paul’s twenty-year career in the Army would take them to Germany, Washington D.C., Ft. Monroe, Virginia, Ft. Benning, Georgia, Ft. Knox, Kentucky as well as her favorite post, Wichita KS.

After Paul retired from the Army in 1981, the family moved to Denver, CO.  It was in Denver that the family came closest to putting down roots.  Mary Ann became an ESL instructor and worked with refugees and immigrants seeking a better life in the U.S.   Her natural compassion was a perfect fit.  She worked with the League of Women Voters to facilitate the functioning of our great democracy which she revered.  By the mid-90s she had launched her children and pivoted to enjoying her life with Paul.  They bought a patio home at Pinehurst Country Club and really started to party with other like-minded empty nesters. They even managed to carve out a few years of “snowbird” living traveling back and forth between Denver and Palm Springs, CA.   Unfortunately, the party had to come to an end when Paul’s Parkinson’s disease required her to return to the role of caregiver.  She cared for Paul as his condition declined with single-minded focus and dedication.   As Paul got closer to the end, Mary Ann began to develop dementia.  Despite losing most of her capacity due to her awful affliction, she never lost her love of music.  Even when she couldn’t remember her own children’s names, she remembered melodies from her past.  Fly me to the Moon, All of Me and a very unusual arrangement of American Pie were some of her favorites to sing.  She spent the last four years of her life in memory care at Brookdale Park Place in Denver, where she was finally dismissed from her earthly duties.

Mary Ann is survived by her sister, Teri Chevreaux, of Tulsa, OK, her son Christopher and his partner, Mike Misa, of Palm Springs, CA, and her son Casey and his wife, Toby Vader, of Denver, CO as well as her beloved grandchildren, Paul and Gabriela Vader.

Memorial service will be held on Thursday, March 14, 2024 at 11:00 AM - Ft. Logan National Cemetery (staging are "A").
