Phyllis Exe Obituary

Phyllis Elaine Exe (Deffenbacher), age 82, passed away on January 2, 2026, in Denver, Colorado, following a years-long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.

Phyllis was born on May 6, 1943, in Eugene, Oregon, to Glen and Maridell (Allum) Deffenbacher. She spent her childhood in Eugene and later moved to Arvada, Colorado, where she built a home defined by care, generosity, and community.

For many years, Phyllis operated an in-home childcare, opening her doors and her heart to families throughout her community. Over the course of her life, she cared for numerous children, providing stability, warmth, and reassurance during some of the most formative years of their lives. Her home was a place where children were welcomed, parents were supported, and lasting bonds were formed. Many of these families became her extended family, and she theirs.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Larry Exe, with whom she shared more than twenty years of marriage, and her brother, James G. Deffenbacher.

She is survived by her daughter, Teresa Bajorek (Jack); her grandchildren, Aaron Bajorek (Kelly) and Stephanie Bajorek; two great-granddaughters; and her sister, Patricia McCallum (Dwain).

Above all, Phyllis will be remembered as a lifelong caregiver. She had a remarkable ability to take people in, help them through difficult seasons, and make them feel safe and supported. She was a devoted grandmother and a steady, compassionate presence to many throughout her life.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. on January 14, 2026, at Drinkwine Family Mortuary in Littleton, Colorado, followed by inurnment at Fort Logan National Cemetery.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the care teams at Clare Bridge at Brookdale Lowry and Berkley Hospice for the compassion, dignity, and loving care they provided to Phyllis.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Berkley Hospice of Aurora.
