Richard McGregor Obituary

On September 16, 2022 Richard H. McGregor passed away at the age of 79 surrounded by family.

Rich was born on June 25, 1943 in Youngstown, OH to Harlan P. McGregor, M.D. and Mollie E. Badertscher McGregor, R.N.  He attended South Range High School where he played safety on the football team and enjoyed running track with his brother.  Throughout life, Rich avidly followed Ohio high school football and could recount plays, games, and players from the 1960s high school football scene in Ohio.  He attended Youngstown State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration.

In 1969, he was drafted into the Army and was stationed at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia.  It was during his time in Washington DC that he met and married Pamela Hess. They had many fond memories of their years in Washington DC and visited often, always stopping for a meal at Clyde’s in Georgetown. After being honorably discharged from the US Army in 1970, Rich and Pam moved to Detroit where he had a 32 year career with the City of Detroit.  He worked in City Planning, Parks and Recreation, and he was especially proud of his work in the US Census.  During his time with the city, he accumulated many stories that he loved to recall with his family and friends.

Rich and Pam have two children, Suzette McGregor Loving and Nicholas McGregor.  Rich was a devoted father who truly enjoyed being with his children. They have fond memories of camping trips, cider mill visits, feeding the deer at Belle Isle, family vacations, and eating donuts for breakfast when Pam worked weekend hospital shifts. He regularly played basketball and football with the neighborhood kids who would knock on the door and ask if "Mr. McGregor could come out and play”.  He was proud of his children and grandchildren and he always enjoyed being around his family.

Rich enjoyed traveling, golf and a good breakfast. In addition to his appreciation for high school football, Rich was an avid fan of college football – particularly Michigan State, Youngstown State and Ohio State.  He followed recruiting classes, watched Spring practices, and he could often be spotted wearing hats and shirts from one of these teams.  In July 2021, he started a scholarship endowment at Youngstown State University.

Rich was preceded in death by his father Harlan McGregor, his mother Mollie McGregor, his brother John McGregor, as well dogs Mac and Sammy. He is survived by Pamela McGregor, daughter Suzette (Rich) Loving, son Nicholas (Regina) McGregor, grandchildren Katherine Loving, Maxwell Loving, Madison McGregor, grand dog Bella, nieces and nephews Joseph (Brenna) Michel, Rachel (Ben) Wachtel, and Jennifer (Bryce) Bumgardner and their families, and many wonderful friends made over his 79 years.
