On Monday, June 15, 2020, Richard “Dick” Meyers, loving husband, father of three children, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren, passed away at the age of 85.
Dick was born on June 13, 1935 in Sioux City, Iowa to Milton and Mable Meyers. He graduated from East High School in Sioux City, Iowa in 1953. From high school, Dick joined the United States Marine Corps from 1954 through 1957. He was very passionate about serving for his country. After the Marines, Dick attended Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa. On July 25, 1959, he married his sweetheart Barbara Jane Socknat and they celebrated their 60th anniversary last summer. They raised sons, Steven and Craig and daughter, Karen.
Dick loved his family and had a passion for boating, so he combined the two and spent many vacations at Lake McConaughy and Lake Powell, creating great memories. He was an avid sportsman and loved hiking, biking, camping and fishing . He loved the Rocky Mountains and he enjoyed traveling to many national parks as well as many trips to see family. With a “do it yourself” attitude, he was an amateur auto mechanic and also worked on home improvement projects. He was also a very loyal Denver Broncos and Colorado Rockies fan. Along the way, Dick cherished his friendships that he made throughout his life. He was known for his quick wit and great memory. His infectious smile affected everyone he met, and thus, everyone became a friend. As a machinery salesman, he enjoyed the many companies he worked for, but his favorite job was working for Schomp Automotive where he met so many wonderful friends. Of course, he looked forward to the Fridays when he met with his long-time coffee buddies.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Mable, his brother Milt and his nephew Marty.
Dick is survived by his wife, Barbara, their children, Steve (Theresa) Meyers, Craig Meyers, Karen (Mark) Hannum, plus 8 grandchildren: Grace and Luke Meyers; Aaron and Emily Hannum; Jacob, Nick and Malea Meyers, Ashley (Jake) Paricio; two great-grandchildren: Makenna and Tristan Paricio. He is also survived by sister-in-law Mary Jarrell of Baton Rouge, LA; brother-in-law Ray (Denece) Socknat of Ely, MN; brother-in-law Thomas (Carmen) Socknat of Etobicoke, Ontario, Canada. Dick had many nieces and nephews: Jill Meyers-Prichard, Sherrie Ahlstrom, Dan Socknat, Nick Socknat; Sonja Socknat, Adam Socknat, Jennifer Mayer, Shannon Abney, Suzanna Warner and Christy Blanchard.
Due to the ongoing pandemic, the Meyers family will have a private Celebration of Life Service and burial at Ft. Logan National Cemetery, with full military honors.
