Robert Sutton Obituary

Robert Edward Sutton, born July 3, 1943, in Burlington, Vermont, peacefully passed away on November 19, 2025.

From the beginning, Robert was a force of nature, a man who lived many rich and varied lives. Born into humble beginnings as the son of a military family, he moved often, learning how to adapt, work hard, and make his own way at a young age. He spent his teenage years on the Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan, where he earned his black belt in ju-jitsu and hosted a television show inspired by American Bandstand.

After returning to Vermont, Robert graduated from St. Michael’s College with a degree in Economics and later served on their Board of Trustees. He became the youngest bar proprietor in the state’s history, as one of the owners of the Third Thumb. Never afraid to chase a dream, he later packed up and drove cross-country to Los Angeles to try his hand at acting.

Robert eventually made Colorado his forever home.  For more than 45 years, he thrived as a successful entrepreneur, helping to grow organizations across real estate, oil and gas, biotechnology, and finance. He was a natural leader, visionary, and endlessly inspiring. His stories sparked action, his ideas created momentum, and his belief in possibilities lifted all those around him.

Robert was passionately involved in motorsports. Through Sutton International Motorsports, he won the Baja 1000 five times, sponsored the Grand Prix of Denver, and partnered with Newman-Haas Champ Car / IRL (4-time World Champions) and Rahal-Letterman IRL (Indy 500 Winner, 2004).

Above all, Robert lived his life with joy, generosity, and an unshakable spirit of adventure. He was a man who never stopped discovering, never stopped striving, and never stopped believing that every challenge could be overcome. His deep, unforgettable laugh will echo in the hearts of all who loved him. His presence was a rare gift, always warm, enthusiastic, and larger than life.

Robert is survived by his devoted and loving wife of 50 years, Julie Sutton; his cherished children, Michelle, Kate, and David; and his beloved grandchildren, who will proudly carry forward his legacy.

He will be honored at a private family-only ceremony. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to American Cancer Society.

You will be loved and missed every second of every day.
