It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Shirley Foster Huntington, who passed away on January 27 in Littleton, Colorado. She was born in Emerson, Arkansas on March 2, 1937. She was the daughter of William and Mary Lizzy Foster.
Shirley grew up on a farm in southern Arkansas with her parents, her brother, Dood, and sister, Pat. She often talked about life on the farm, friends, and going to church, where she learned to appreciate the old southern hymns.
While working as a secretary at the Standard Oil Company in Magnolia, Arkansas, Shirley met the love of her life, Frederic Huntington. In 1959, they were married at New Era Church in Arkansas. While Fred worked for Standard Oil and Texaco, they moved around to Williston, ND, Cortez, CO, Farmington, NM, and to Littleton, CO in 1972. They also spent some time in Midland, TX later in Fred’s career. They made so many dear friends and special memories along the way.
Shirley was a loving and devoted mother to two daughters, Stacey and Tania, with whom she shared so many life lessons. She was proud of the women they became and cherished the time she spent with them. Shirley also loved spending time with her son-in-law, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. She was “Gammy” to her four granddaughters and spent countless hours with them, sharing her love of gardening, reading stories, and watching old movies with them.
Gardening, golfing, and sewing were hobbies that Shirley relished. Every spring and summer, the yard was full of beautiful flowers and bountiful vegetables. When she wasn’t in the yard, she could be found on the golf course. She played with a ladies group at South Suburban for years, and also enjoyed playing in couples groups with Fred and friends. In the winter months Shirley could be found at her sewing machine creating clothing for herself and all of her kids and grandkids.
Shirley is survived by her daughters Stacey Helbig (Frank), Tania Moore, granddaughters Alexis Sandoval, Emily Cantrell, Kendall Helbig, and Abbey Moore, as well as four great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, and her beloved husband, Frederic.
Heaven is gaining a beautiful soul that has taught us so much about living, loving, and enjoying the beauty around us.
A funeral service will be held at Littleton United Methodist Church (5894 S. Datura Street, Littleton, CO) on Friday, February 7th at 10:30 in the morning. It will be followed by a reception at the church.
