Sidney Wright Obituary

Sidney Charles Wright (Sid), 92, of Littleton Colorado, passed away on January 19, 2020. He was the son of the late Sidney and Beulah Wright, born in Lincoln, Nebraska.  He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1945, joined the US Army and served in World War II.  After discharge, he graduated from the University of Nebraska with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Sid married Susanne (Susie) Hoffman, of Lincoln, in 1951, a union that lasted 68 years.  The day after the wedding, they moved to New York where he had taken a job with Sperry Gyroscope.  In that capacity he worked on navigation equipment, most notably for the USS Nautilus, the first submarine to complete a submerged transit of the North Pole.  In 1961, Sid and Susie welcomed the arrival of Glenn, their first child.  The family lived in New York until 1963, when he took a position at Martin Marietta in Colorado.  At Martin, Sid worked on guidance and control systems for spacecraft, including the Titan missile, the Viking Mars lander, and the Skylab space station.  A few years later, Sid and Susie celebrated the birth of Patricia, their second child.  Away from work, Sid was member and elder of St. James Presbyterian Church, and was greatly involved in Freemasonry.  He was a Master of Weston Lodge #22 and a member of the El Jebel Shrine.

Sid loved people, especially his wife, family and friends.  He was loyal and kind, speaking well of everyone.  He had a quiet, strong Christian faith.  Sid was generous, but did not care to receive recognition for his giving.  He was logical and precise, always valuing the importance of the detail and the job done right.  He retained his love of airplanes throughout his life, and had a private pilot’s license.  He was an avid amateur radio operator and belonged to many radio clubs.  Sid enjoyed golf, camping, fishing, and travelling to see new places.  He loved swing and boogie woogie jazz music, tropical islands, palm trees, and barbequing and eating outdoors.  Sid was a lifelong fan of the Denver Broncos, the Colorado Rockies, and most importantly, the Nebraska Cornhuskers.  He was a master at crosswords, word puzzles, he loved the occasional pun, and a good joke.

Sid is survived by his sister, Frances Kendle of Lincoln, Nebraska, two children, Glenn Wright (Lori) of Yuma, Arizona, and Patricia Fairbanks (Jeff) of Evergreen, Colorado, and five grandchildren, Stacy Sample (Josh) of New Bern, North Carolina, Lance Wright (Tanya) of Buckeye, Arizona, Christiana Wright of Mesa, Arizona, and Sidney and Jack Fairbanks, both of Evergreen, Colorado.  He is also survived by four great-grandchildren.  He was loved by many.

A viewing ceremony will be held on Monday, February 3rd, 2020 at 10:30 a.m. at St. James Presbyterian Church in Littleton, followed by the funeral service at 11:00. Interment will occur at Fort Logan National Cemetery at 1:00 p.m.  A reception will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the Weston Lodge.  The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be given to Shriner’s Hospital for Children.
