Thurman Cardwell Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Thurman Odell Cardwell, age 87, of Littleton, Colorado. Thurman was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, whose kindness and zest for life touched everyone who knew him.

Born on March 5, 1937, Thurman was the youngest of five sons to Ida Elizabeth Higdon and Floyd Allen Cardwell. He grew up in Englewood, Colorado, where he cultivated a love for the outdoors, spending countless weekends fishing and hunting in the mountains with his family and friends. Even as a young man, Thurman had an entrepreneurial spirit, working side jobs to fund his passions. He had a keen eye for beautiful cars and was rarely seen without a stunner in his younger years!

Thurman attended Englewood High School, where he excelled as a multi-sport athlete, playing football, basketball, and baseball. His talents on the baseball field earned him an opportunity to play for the Baltimore Orioles farm team. However, life had other plans, and Thurman returned to Colorado.

While working at a local sporting goods store, he met Arlys Kay Miller, a young woman from Iowa, in an unconventional but charming way—offering her free ski rentals in exchange for a date. She accepted, and the two fell deeply in love. They married in 1964, embarking on a beautiful journey together that would last over six decades.

Thurman began a successful career in banking, starting at First Federal Savings and Loan. While working, he attended the University of Indiana, further honing his skills and building a respected reputation in the industry. Over the years, he made lasting connections, helped establish a new bank, and left a legacy of more than 40 years in banking.

In 1978, Thurman and Arlys moved to the close-knit community of Bow Mar, a place they cherished for its friendships and shared memories. Thurman loved tending to his garden, hitting the golf course, exploring new destinations, and enjoying great meals. A devoted Denver Broncos fan, he held season tickets for over 50 years and was a proud member of Pinehurst Country Club.

Thurman’s greatest joy was his family. He is survived by his devoted wife, Arlys Cardwell, and their three children and their families: Cindy and her husband Tim Miller, Deanna and her husband Dominick Deorio, and Thurman and his wife Dana Cardwell. He was a proud grandfather to seven grandchildren: Kestly, Amanda, Alexandra, Owen, Ian, Hadley, and Gabrielle. Thurman is preceded in death by his parents, Ida and Floyd Cardwell, and his brothers Wallace, Floyd, Lowell, and Harold Cardwell.

A celebration of Thurman’s remarkable life will be held on Friday, January 3, 2025, at 2:30 PM at Drinkwine Family Chapel.

Thurman’s kindness, wit, and unwavering love for his family and friends will be deeply missed. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.
